Beginners course in Water Colour

01. Colour Wheel and Techniques

Lesson 1

Lets begin by introducing you to some watercolour techniques, guiding you step by step as you prepare to create your own painting in the second lesson. After mastering some of these skills, I will teach you the basics of the watercolour colour wheel.

Enjoy the journey together!

02. Tonal Values

Lesson 2

This might be your first watercolour painting, so let me lead you through the process step by step. The goal is to help you understand the importance of tonal values in your art work. Even more important than choosing the right colours, is making sure that you are using the right tonal value.

I hope you enjoy this journey into the world of watercolours!!

Tonal Values

03. Silhouettes

Lesson 3

The tonal value lesson was your preparation, but painting silhouettes requires that you use a few more colours to create an even greater effect.  More important than using correct colours, though, is assuring that you are still using the right colour value.

May the use of colour excite you as you discover their effects!!

04. Fish

Lesson 4

By creating this painting of a few fish, I plan to help you to polish the following watercolour skills: ‘wet into wet’, ‘glazing’, the effect of salt into a wet surface and using art masking fluid to retain the white of the page. (pure watercolour works do not include using any white paint)

Let’s dive right in!!

05. Cottage landscapes

Lesson 5

Today we will be painting a landscape with a cottage. Arniston, a small, coastal town in South Africa, is one of my favourite places to visit.  If you can capture the spirit of this peaceful, simple fishing community in your painting you have achieved a lot.

Enjoy!!

Portraits

I love to share some of my portraits with you. I work in several media such as pencil, charcoal, water colour, oil, ink and soft pastels.

Animals:

When trying to paint animals for the first time, you might wonder how our Creator managed to make them so different, yet so perfect. To paint them is always a challenge, but one I’m willing to accept. I will keep trying.

Defence:

One of the best exercises an artist can do is to create their own still life, rather than working from someone else’s pre-designed composition. It teaches you about overlapping shapes, casted shadows, reflections, and other key details.

Figures:

To draw or paint human figures, it’s important to consider the theoretical principles of proportions for different age groups, muscle development, and other related factors.

Flowers:

Painting flowers can be one of the most rewarding activities to do in art. Colours, shapes, perspectives, movement and others are exciting elements to keep in mind when doing this.

Landscapes

Landscapes can take on a wide range of forms, with various artistic elements represented in different scenes. These can include texture, composition, movement, colour and more.

Seascapes:

Discover a variety of exciting paintings touching one of my first loves, the ocean. I have worked in several media to try and capture this dynamic element of Gods creation.

Still life:

One of the best exercises an artist can do is to create their own still life, rather than working from someone else’s pre-designed composition. It teaches you about overlapping shapes, casted shadows, reflections, and other key details.

Lithography:

I like making portraits, using lithography, because one can really write something very personal in order to bless the people you are capturing in the art work.

Spiritual Paintings:

When deciding on any topic to paint, this is always my first choice. I LOVE capturing in paint what the Lord is revealing in my Spirit.
